A structural steel beam frames into a continuous hollow structural section column using a shear plate and bolts sized per schedule. A one-half-inch backing plate, with a length matching the shear plate and a width equal to the column width minus one and one-half inches, is welded to the column. A one-quarter-inch cap plate is provided at the top of the column where applicable, and slotted connections are detailed per sheet S5.1.
