A steel column cap plate connects to the top of either a hollow structural section or wide-flange column. The hollow structural section column utilizes a three-eighths-inch cap plate for columns six by six inches or smaller, and a half-inch cap plate for columns seven by seven inches or larger. The wide-flange column utilizes a half-inch cap plate for W10 or W8 shapes, and a seven-eighths-inch cap plate for W14 or W12 shapes. A shear tab is welded to the column web where indicated to receive framing members. Fillet welds secure the cap plate and shear tab according to specified web and flange thicknesses.
