An HSS 4x4x1/4 hollow structural section post supports a typical stair stringer sized per plan. The post connects to the underside of the stringer via a 1/4-inch bearing plate secured with 3/4-inch diameter machine bolts. Three-eighths-inch thick stiffener plates are welded inside the stringer above the post bearing location with three-sixteenths-inch fillet welds. Additional support configurations at grid lines A, B, and C show varying bolt spacings and stiffener placements.
