A hollow structural section measuring six inches by two inches by one-quarter inch thick acts as a plug column from below, bearing directly against a twelve-inch by six and three-quarter inch by one-inch thick steel plate. The steel plate is secured to the timber column above using four five-eighths-inch diameter glued-in rods inserted into three-quarter-inch diameter holes. A one-eighth-inch gap is provided between the hollow structural section face and the plate for tolerance. The hollow structural section plug column is connected to the steel plate with two one-half-inch thick by six-inch long by three-wide steel shear tabs complete with two five-eighths-inch diameter through-bolts and cotter pins. Cross-laminated timber panels are omitted from the view for clarity.
