A structural steel beam connects to a frame column utilizing complete joint penetration welds at the top and bottom flanges and a bolted web connection via an erection plate. Continuous plates are welded on both sides of the column web with five-sixteenths inch fillet welds. A cap plate with a thickness equal to the beam flange thickness plus one-half inch sits atop the column, secured with partial joint penetration and fillet welds. Backing bars are specified at the continuous plate welds, and specific offset dimensions govern the framing geometry.
