Steel bar joists are supported by a steel beam, with spacing determined by the roof framing plan. A three-by-three-by-one-quarter inch angle brace is installed at every joist location, secured to the beam bottom flange with a one-quarter inch fillet weld. These braces must be welded to the beam only after the roof deck is installed. A six-inch wide wood nailer matches the beam flange width and is fastened between bar joists using seven-eighths inch diameter welded studs at twelve inches on center. Brace locations must be coordinated with sprinkler piping, and braces must be positioned within six inches of the top chord panel point or include an auxiliary web.
