Masonry wall openings are reinforced with specific vertical and horizontal steel bar schedules based on the opening width. Two number five horizontal bars are required for openings up to four feet maximum, four number five horizontal bars for up to eight feet maximum, and four number six horizontal bars for up to fourteen feet maximum, unless noted otherwise. Vertical reinforcement requires two number five bars full height for openings up to four feet maximum, and four number five bars full height for openings up to eight and twelve feet maximum. Vertical dowels match the size and spacing of the vertical bars and extend into the concrete footing with a minimum lap length of forty diameters or two feet minimum. Additional two number five horizontal bars are typical at the top and bottom of openings with specified lap minimums.
