A wide-flange column is topped with a cap plate measuring one-half inch thick for W10 or W8 sections, or seven-eighths inch thick for W14 or W12 sections, unless otherwise noted. A three-eighths-inch fillet weld is used typically at the flange connection. A web stiffener plate welded with a size equal to half the web thickness is centered within the column profile.
