Two steel beams meet end-to-end at a rigid moment connection featuring complete joint penetration welds on the top and bottom flanges. A 50 KSI web plate matching the beam web thickness plus one-eighth inch connects the webs using three seven-eighth-inch diameter erection bolts on each side. The web plate is welded on three sides with five-sixteenth-inch fillets and one-inch returns. Standard weld access holes are provided at the beam webs adjacent to the flanges. Minimum beam depth requirements govern the web plate sizing.
