A wide-flange beam frames into the centerline of a wide-flange or hollow structural section column using a bolted cap plate connection. The cap plate matches the column width or beam flange width with a minimum thickness matching the beam flange and is fastened with four three-quarter-inch diameter bolts, or five-eighths-inch diameter bolts when the beam flange is under four inches. A full-height connection plate is installed at the beam web, paired with stiffener plates on each side where the column depth exceeds twelve inches, welded with quarter-inch fillet welds at each flange and the web.
