Two aligned hollow structural section members connect end-to-end with a maximum half-inch gap permitted at the splice location. Two steel plates measuring one inch by one and three-quarters by one foot six inches long weld to each side of the hollow structural section members using one-quarter-inch fillet welds spaced eight and one-half inches typical on each plate. Section C-C confirms the placement of the side plates against the profile of the hollow structural section member.
