An HSS beam connects to a steel column flange using top and bottom L4x4x3/8 angles whose width matches the column flange width, alongside a 3/8-inch by 3-inch plate at each side of the HSS beam. A maximum 1/2-inch gap is maintained between the beam end and the column face, with a 1-inch typical clearance above. Five-sixteenth-inch fillet welds secure the angles and plates to the structural members. A similar connection is mirrored on each side of the column, noting the use of an HSS column instead of a wide-flange column.
