A structural transition splice connects an upper column flange to a lower column flange using a complete-joint-penetration weld with a backing or contour requirement designated as CJP, DCW. The lower column flange is chamfered before welding at a slope of 2.5 to 1. A weld access hole complying with AISC 360 is detailed at the web-to-flange intersection, with dimensions not exceeding 1 1/2 inches max. The column web above aligns continuously with the column web below through the splice region.
