This structural steel detail shows a beam-to-column flange connection at the top of a column, featuring a horizontal cap plate welded across the column top. The cap plate thickness is sized to the greater of either beam flange thickness plus one quarter inch, with a one-inch minimum. Continuity plates are provided between the column flanges, using the larger of the connecting beam flange thicknesses. Shear tabs are bolted to the beam webs and column flange where required, transferring vertical shear loads. Welds connect the cap plate to the top and bottom flanges of the intersecting structural steel members.
