This transverse section details an expansion joint assembly across a concrete or steel deck and curb. The joint is sealed with a twenty-eight-inch wide by 0.060-inch thick butyl rubber or EPDM waterproofing membrane centered over the open joint. A twenty-two-inch wide by 16-gauge galvanized sheet metal cover plate is installed over the membrane, supplemented by a one-half-inch by ten-inch wide steel cover plate positioned on the deck and curb slots. The assembly incorporates minimum one-inch overall asphalt protective cover sheets layered over the waterproofing membrane.
