A structural steel column web is reinforced with a doubler plate and provided with continuity plates aligned at the beam flange locations. Complete joint penetration welds connect the continuity plates to the column flanges and web. The height of the doubler plate extends between the continuity plates with a clearance dimension determined by the column k1 distance plus one-eighth inch typically. Complete joint penetration welds are specified at the plate connections.
