An upper hollow structural section column transitions to a larger lower hollow structural section column via a transition cap plate welded with complete joint penetration welds. The cap plate thickness is sized per design with a minimum thickness of 1.5 times the HSS wall thickness or 1 inch minimum. Four internal locator plates are optionally welded to the cap plate to align the upper column. The transition splice is located four feet six inches above the top of the slab.
CAP PLATE THICKNESS AS REQUIRED BY DESIGN. MINIMUM 1-1/2 X HSS WALL THICKNESS, OR 1" MINIMUM CL COLUMN 4'-6" ABOVE T/SLAB CJP CJP FINISHED COLUMN END SURFACE 4-INTERNAL LOCATER PLATES WELDED TO CAP PLATE (OPTIONAL)
