A structural steel beam frames into the top of a column oriented with its web perpendicular to the beam axis. A three-quarter-inch thick cap plate sized to the column flange width plus one inch by column depth plus one inch sits atop the column and connects to the beam flange with four three-quarter-inch diameter bolts at the beam gage. Three-eighths-inch thick partial-height stiffener plates are welded to both sides of the column web, matching the beam flange width and aligned with the column web. A quarter-inch fillet weld secures the cap plate and stiffeners to the column per plan.
