A welded and bolted buckling restrained brace (BRB) connection features a diagonal brace aligned with the center line and encased in an HSS casing that must remain free on all sides within the surrounding concrete slab. Polystyrene foam conforming to ASTM C578 Type 1 (10 PSI), a bond breaker, and specified clearances are required around the HSS casing per the contract documents. The gusset plate connects via a combination of welds and bolts to transfer lateral loads into the structural element.
