An HSS beam connects to a supporting W-beam using three-eighths-inch plates on each side welded with one-quarter-inch fillets. The side plates extend a minimum of four inches onto the wide-flange web and are welded to the HSS beam and side plates. Side plates measure three-eighths-inch thick and are welded on three sides typically. The HSS beam and W-beam sizes are specified per the structural plan.
