A structural detail for a canopy expansion joint slip connection utilizing hollow structural section members including an HSS12x10 and connecting HSS10x6 sections sized per plan. A 2-inch expansion joint gap is provided in the roof deck across the junction. Teflon side bearing pads with 3/8-inch thick carbon steel backup material are coordinated with the supplier. The connection incorporates a galvanized L8x4x5/8x1'-1" long leg horizontal angle and multiple galvanized plates including a 3/8x6x1'-1" plate centered with a 4-inch long slotted hole for two 5/8-inch diameter A325-N bolts, hand-tightened with damaged threads to prevent nut backoff. Additional connections use 3/8x4 1/2x0'-6" plates with two 7/8-inch diameter A325-N bolts in standard holes, and 3/8x3 1/2x0'-6" plates welded with 5/16-inch fillet welds top and bottom. A 3/8-inch end plate is provided with welds conforming to Table 10-14C in the AISC Steel Construction Manual 15th Edition for skew plates.
