An open web steel joist is reinforced with L 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 x 3/16 steel angles placed on each side of the joist when a load is applied to the top or bottom chord away from a panel point. The reinforcing angles extend from the load location to the nearest opposite chord panel point. When the distance from the load to the panel point is three inches or less, these reinforcing angles are omitted. Fillet welds of 3/16 inch size connect the members typically. This detail is not required for loads less than 250 pounds, while unnoted loads exceeding 500 pounds must be reported to the engineer.
