Two wide flange steel columns meet at a horizontal splice line with milled bearing surfaces. Erection backing plates are provided by others at the interior flange connections. A complete joint penetration weld connects the flanges between the k-regions, while partial joint penetration welds are used typically along the remaining flange width. The splice requires a minimum four-foot clearance to the top of steel.
