About this detail

This structural detail provides masonry reinforcing and control joint requirements for large openings in non-load bearing concrete masonry unit walls. A bond beam is required below openings with one number five horizontal bar for each layer of vertical wall reinforcing. Control joints incorporate a one-half inch diameter by four-foot long smooth dowel greased or sleeved on one side to prevent bond with grout, or approved masonry control joint units. Horizontal reinforcing terminates two inches from the control joint. Top of wall connections are required within eight inches of openings, with two connections required within the jamb reinforcement width for walls greater than eighteen feet tall with openings greater than four feet.
