An HSS beam connects to a wide-flange girder using a full-height shear plate welded to the girder flange and bolted to an end plate on the HSS beam. The end plate matches the shear plate thickness with a one-half-inch minimum, while the girder flange requires a minimum width of four and one-half inches or not less than half the beam flange width plus one-half inch. A complete-joint-penetration weld or partial-joint-penetration weld is specified based on the HSS thickness, with fillet welds applied to three sides as detailed.
