A heavy steel column splice joins an upper W14x211 column to a lower W14x311 column. The connection is made using 1 inch thick by 11-1/2 inch wide ASTM A572-50 flange plates secured with multiple rows of 1 inch diameter by 4-3/4 inch F1852 high-strength bolts. Flange spacers measuring 11/16 inch by 11-1/2 inch A572-50 accommodate the transition in column flange thickness between the different W-shape profiles. The web connection utilizes 1/2 inch by 9 inch ASTM A572-50 web plates on both sides of the web, accompanied by 1/8 inch by 9 inch web spacers and secured with 1 inch diameter by 4 inch F1852 bolts.
