A structural steel beam frames into a hollow structural section column utilizing a single plate shear tab welded to the column face and bolted to the framing member web. A cap plate is welded across the top of the hollow structural section column, specified as three-eighths inch thick for sizes six by six or smaller, and one-half inch thick for sizes seven by seven or larger unless noted otherwise. A weld symbol with a penetration note indicates the connection of the cap plate to the column top. A clearance gap of negative one-eighth inch is detailed between the supporting column and supported elements.
