A wide-flange steel column connects to a cap plate sized to match the flange thickness plus a maximum one-quarter inch. A five-sixteenth inch fillet weld secures the assembly, with backing bars and weld tabs to be removed after the root pass is cleaned and inspected. Slip-critical A490 bolts in Class B connections fasten the vertical plates to the column flanges. A three-eighths inch typical weld is detailed at the base of the connection plates.
