A hollow structural section column passes through a slot in a three-quarter inch by twelve-inch by zero-foot-eight-inch plate and connects to the supporting structural assembly. A five-eighths-inch typical weld secures the column to the plate assembly. A complete joint penetration weld joins the structural components, and a one-half-inch dimension indicates the separation or plate thickness gap.
