A steel framing detail shows a wide-flange girder connected to a wide-flange column flange with a moment connection. The top and bottom girder flanges are welded directly to the column flange using complete joint penetration groove welds designated as demand critical. A plate made of ASTM A572 Grade 50 steel with a minimum thickness of 3/8 inch is attached to the beam web and bolted to the column using erection bolts installed by the contractor. This connection plate extends past the beam web to overlap with the weld access hole, serving as backing for the complete joint penetration weld. The weld backing is subsequently removed, the root backgouged to sound weld metal, and a 5/16 inch minimum fillet weld is added unless a gusset plate is present. Continuity plates are provided on each side of the column web aligned with the top and bottom flanges.
