A structural steel column penetrates a slab on grade within a diamond-shaped isolation layout centered on the column grid lines. The surrounding floor fill is placed after the main slab pour, though the second pour may be omitted if the column is already in place prior to pouring. A minimum three-inch perimeter clearance is maintained around the base plate or embed plate. A diamond-shaped control joint is required regardless of the pour sequence, with minimum eight-inch typical dimensions from the column face.
