An HSS beam connects to the web of a wide flange column using top and bottom L4x4x1/2 structural steel angles sized to the column width minus one and a half inches. The angles weld to the wide flange column with five-sixteenth-inch fillet welds on both sides. The HSS beam connects to the angles with quarter-inch fillet welds on three sides, maintaining a maximum half-inch clearance to the column face. Field weld symbols and size callouts govern the attachment of the beam to the support angles.
