Two vertical steel column sections align end-to-end and connect using structural steel channels welded with five-sixteenth-inch fillet welds on each side. The channel splices utilize three-quarter-inch-diameter ASTM A325 bolts with two washers each, positioned at standard vertical spacings. Channel sizes vary by column profile, specifying C6x10.5 for W8 columns, C7x12.25 for W10 columns, and C9x15 for W12 columns and above. A partial-joint-penetration weld secures the joint interface between the upper and lower column shafts. Columns exceeding thirty feet in length or one hundred pounds per foot require two channels placed one on each side.
