Steel beam web penetrations require careful placement to preserve structural capacity near supports. A circular opening with a maximum four-inch diameter is positioned outside the middle third of the beam span at a minimum distance of two times the beam depth from the support centerline. The penetration must fall within the middle third of the beam depth, maintaining a minimum clearance of one-third of the beam depth from both the top and bottom flanges. Structural steel framing sizes are determined per plan.
