A structural connection joins an HSS building column and steel wide-flange beams at an expansion joint with a metal deck bearing. A 5/8-inch thick fifty ksi gusset plate is welded to the HSS dunnage column with five-sixteenths inch fillet welds and features pre-drilled holes for future bracing. The HSS column anchors to a one-half inch by twenty-inch by twenty-inch base plate fastened with eight one-and-one-half inch diameter welded threaded rods equally spaced around the HSS, connecting to a matching cap plate over the structural steel framing. Complete joint penetration welds secure the HSS to the base and cap plates, while angles provide additional deck support per plan.
