A structural steel beam connects to a vertical column using a built-up plate tee fastened with a vertical line of six bolts and featuring standard or short slotted holes spaced at one and a half inches. A three-eighths inch typical cap plate is welded to the top of the column with a five-sixteenths inch weld. For members with dimension B less than or equal to six inches, a knife plate connection uses a three-eighths by B plus one inch plate with five-sixteenths inch welds. For members with dimension B greater than or equal to seven inches, the knife plate uses a three-eighths by B minus one inch plate, or a three-eighths by B minus one and a half inch plate when thickness t is greater than or equal to three-eighths of an inch. Additional plate connections labeled Pl. 't' attach to the side of the structural assembly with matching fillet welds.
