An HSS beam connects to the flange of a wide flange beam with three-eighths-inch thick stiffener plates located on each side of the HSS member. The stiffener plates are welded to the wide flange beam with one-quarter-inch fillet welds on three sides. The HSS beam is secured with one-quarter-inch fillet welds on both the near side and far side typically. A three-inch dimension and a one-half-inch maximum clearance apply to the connection layout.
