A structural steel column connects to an overhead beam via a one-half-inch Type 2 cap plate extended one-half inch minimum beyond each side of the column flange. Type 1 stiffener plates are welded near side and far side to the beam web aligned with the column flanges. Welds W1 secure the column flanges to the cap plate, while welds W2 and W3 provide the required structural connection for the stiffener plates.
