An existing concrete pan joist structure is modified for a new shaft opening with framing supported by a structural steel member. A six-inch by six-inch shim plate of thickness as required provides full bearing under the joist cut for the new opening. A stiffener plate on one side is welded with quarter-inch fillet welds typically. A C23 connection uses two seven-eighths-inch diameter A325 bolts. New shaft openings vary by floor and require coordination with existing framing and architectural and mechanical plans.
