A typical slip connection at the top of an HSS column provides a two-inch vertical gap to accommodate relative movement. Three-eighths-inch by four-inch by six-inch connection plates are welded to each side of the column with a one-quarter-inch fillet weld. Three-quarter-inch diameter A325-N bolts are centered in three-inch long vertical slotted holes to allow vertical displacement. Bolts are installed snug tight with an additional one-quarter turn, and thread ends are damaged at the nut to prevent backing off.
