A structural steel beam connects to a tubular column using a half-inch kerf shear plate inserted through the column wall and welded with five-sixteenths inch fillet welds. A half-inch thick connection plate with standard bolt holes is welded to the beam web. Bolts sized and quantified per structural schedule S52-00 fasten the web plate with three-inch on-center spacing, one and a half inch edge distances, and a half-inch typical radius at cutouts. The kerf shear plate extends six inches minimum and is one-eighth inch maximum wider than the stiffener plate.
