A wide-flange column transition splice connection joins upper wide-flange column A to lower wide-flange column B using a horizontal transitional butt plate. The butt plate thickness is sized to be the largest of half the lower flange thickness or one and a half inches minimum, matching the flange width of the wide-flange column. The plate surface is milled for full bearing with partial-joint-penetration welds typically specified between k-regions. Both column ends are milled square, and the splice line is positioned four feet minimum above the top of steel.
