An open-web steel joist bears directly on a three-quarter-inch steel cap plate welded to the top of a steel column sized per plan. Bolting is required for all joists with spans greater than or equal to forty feet. Additional connection criteria specify one-eighth-inch by two-inch plates at K-series joists and one-quarter-inch by two-inch plates at long-span LH-series joists.
