A structural steel HSS column and brace connection bears on a reinforced concrete footing with a two-inch non-shrink grout layer. An HSS18x18x7/8 column connects to a base plate anchored by anchor bolts utilizing four-inch square by one-and-a-half-inch Grade 50 plate washers and shim plates in lieu of leveling nuts. The top twelve inches of the anchor bolts are wrapped with electrical tape to prevent bond with the concrete. A central HSS shear key is set into a twenty-two by twenty-two-inch blockout with a depth of one foot four inches. A one-inch Grade 50 gusset plate ties into the brace with complete joint penetration welds on each flange, while the slab on grade rests at the top of the footing.
