The construction joint assembly utilizes one foot four inch long smooth dowel bars spaced at twelve inches on center, with a diameter equal to one-eighth of the slab thickness. These dowels are installed perpendicular to the joint, flush against the underside of the perpendicular slab reinforcement, and located no closer than twelve inches from corners. One end of each dowel is coated with a form-release agent to act as a bond break, with all coated ends positioned on the same side of the joint. The joint face is painted with a curing compound as a bond break before the adjacent slab is poured. The control joint assembly consists of a metal or joint filler strip placed flush with the surface during the pour, or a one-eighth inch wide saw cut filled with sealant. Every other reinforcing bar crossing the control joint is discontinued, with a six-inch gap centered at the joint.
