New openings cut into existing concrete or masonry require core-drilling six-inch diameter holes in each corner prior to sawcutting to prevent overcutting the corners. The remaining corner material is chipped out as required to achieve a square opening. Non-destructive testing must be performed to locate existing reinforcing bars prior to cutting, and the new opening must be positioned to avoid contact with existing reinforcement. All opening locations must be reviewed and approved by the structural engineer prior to coring.
