A wide flange column bears onto a base plate anchored into a concrete pad footing, set over a half-inch layer of sand with three inches of concrete cover over the reinforcement. Two-inch non-shrink grout is packed beneath the base plate and extends past its edges. A one-quarter-inch fillet weld connects the column flange to the base plate.
