A structural steel beam frames into a hollow structural section column using a bolted single-plate shear tab connection. The top of the HSS column is sealed with a welded cap plate, sized three-eighths of an inch thick for columns six by six inches or smaller, and one-half inch thick for columns seven by seven inches or larger. The column top is set one-eighth inch below the specified elevation.
