A hollow structural section or pipe column or wide flange column bears directly onto a steel base plate resting atop a wide flange supporting beam. The base plate has a thickness matching the beam flange with a five-eighths inch minimum, sized one-half inch wider than the beam flange or column whichever is greater. Four three-quarter inch diameter A307 bolts secure the column base plate to the supporting beam flange. Stiffener plates matching the beam web thickness with a three-eighths inch minimum are welded to each side of the beam web beneath the column load. Fillet welds of one-quarter inch size secure the components as indicated by typical weld symbols.
