This structural steel column splice detail joins two wide-flange vertical members using complete joint penetration welds on both flanges and web. The upper and lower column sections connect end-to-end with a transition dimensioned relative to the web thickness. An optional bolted erection aid with a lifting hole may be installed at the contractor's discretion to assist with alignment during placement. Flange backing bars and run-off tabs must be removed after welding, with the finish ground to an American Welding Society acceptable profile. The web connection incorporates a specified minimum radius transition, and column splices are permitted to be shop welded.
